Storytelling, which both bypasses the issue of literacy and has proven to be effective worldwide, is the primary method used in this curriculum. The “storybook” or “textbook” is the Campus Crusade film, Magdalena: Released from Shame, which is available in over 185 languages. The film consists of stories about Jesus Christ’s compassionate and healing ministry to many of the deeply wounded and hurting women of His day.
Each individual story is coupled with the SING Six-Step Lesson Format which is used for teaching all thirty-six lessons. This standard format includes questions, colorful graphics, class exercises, Bible verses, and opportunities to practice what has been learned. At the conclusion of each class, both the story of the day and the specific insights and skills that were learned are summarized with a closing prayer.
With the combination of Magdalena film segments and the SING Six-Step Lesson Format, the class members are able to:
appreciate the love, healing, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ;
understand how His deep caring can impact lives today;
identify and label the emotions of the people in the Bible story;
identify and label their own personal feelings;
learn the skills to handle their emotions in a constructive way;
develop a sense of self-worth;
gain or regain their voices;
learn positive interpersonal skills;
envision hope for the future;
seek to become the persons that God intended them to be.
Whether studying in a safe house, refugee camp, discipleship program, youth group, or any other type of setting, the participants learn not only about the loving ministry of Jesus Christ, but also the beautiful persons that they can become.
